Decorating Outside the Box: Kitchen Backsplash Alternatives

The majority of kitchen backsplashes are, quite frankly, predictable by nature. They may vary slightly in arrangement, material, shape, color, or pattern, but for the most part they fall into the category of what you’d expect. It makes sense, considering the fact that tile resists water and is (usually) easy to clean. Yet, too often, we forget that any opportunity to get creative - however small - is essential to showcasing a home’s personality. The backsplash, it turns out, isn’t just a function-heavy area relegated to the end of a remodel to-do list. It’s a chance to make your kitchen truly one-of-a-kind.

Read on for our round up of the trend-setting backsplashes on our radar right now. We’ve got a feeling that after this bit of design inspiration, you’ll be dying to ditch that subway tile and forge a completely new and uncharted route.

Double Duty

Who says backsplashes have to be only for decoration? We love when they embrace double duty instead - especially as writing surfaces. After all, a kitchen is always in need of a space to jot down grocery lists or to plan out the week’s menu, so why not do it right on the walls? Chalkboards are great options for a more eclectic and “weathered” look, while back-painted glass works great as a marker board and gives your kitchen a smooth and modern aesthetic.

Windows & Mirrors

It’s no secret that windows and mirrors are must haves in any room to help the space feel larger and more light-filled overall. So, why not incorporate them into your backsplash? Of course, this option would be stunning in any kitchen, but it’s extra essential for spaces that are small on square footage, can’t afford to sacrifice upper cabinet space, or lack a window view to the outside.

Chic & Sleek Metal

Whether visually simple (think a sheet of copper) or bright and textured (think pink-painted steel), metal is an excellent backsplash alternative. It pairs perfectly with just about any cabinet look, and it’s a functional and visually impactful way to complete your space without the busyness of overly-patterned tile arrangements. We’re huge fans, to say the least.

Flexible Flair

If you aren’t sold on a tiled backsplash because you hate the idea of a too-permanent look, then the duo of wallpaper and glass is right up your alley. This flexible option allows you to swap out the layer of pattern underneath as you please (especially if you use temporary wallpaper), while the layer of glass on top makes the whole thing just as waterproof and functional as tile. It’s a kitchen must have!

Solid Surfaces

Love the uniform look of a single sheet of metal, but want something with a bit more pattern or interest? Then go for solid surfaces like granite, marble, quartz, or concrete. They’re durable by nature, and the effect on a larger backsplash area is stunning.

Textured Magic

Of course, we can’t overstate the beauty of a textured backsplash to make your kitchen come to life. We’re all about venetian plaster right now, since you can customize it however you’d like, but equally gorgeous options include wood paneling and PVC rubber. These unexpected materials give your kitchen an infusion of interest that you’re guaranteed to love.
